Frequently asked questions

Which boat can I skipper without a licence?

Boats up to 5 metres in length and 15 kW (about 20 hp), by day and no more than 2 nautical miles from a port.

What is the titulín?

It is the Licencia de Navegación, Spain’s entry-level boating licence: it allows boats up to 6 metres with suitable power, by day and up to 2 nautical miles from a port or shelter.

Can I go to another island with the PNB?

In Spain the licence depends on the boat’s length, engine power and how far you want to go. Without any licence you may skipper boats up to 5 metres and 15 kW (about 20 hp), by day and within 2 miles of a port. The Licencia de Navegación covers boats up to 6 metres with suitable power, by day and within 2 miles of a port or shelter.

The PNB covers boats up to 8 metres, by day and within 5 miles of a port, and the PER boats up to 15 metres and up to 12 miles from the coast; with extra training it extends to 24 metres and crossings between the mainland and the Balearics. This guide is indicative: always check current rules (Royal Decree 875/2014) and the licence required for each boat.
